UVU to Host Slovenia's Top Club Team in Exhibition Add Comment    Aug 31, 2011

OREM, UTAH - Following a solid start to the 2011 season, UVU is set to host an exhibition match with some international flair when Nova KBM Branik, the top club team from the nation of Slovenia, comes to Orem on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Activity Center.

In last weekend's Wolverine Invitational, UVU opened the season with a gritty win in a back-and-forth match against Illinois State on Friday night, and followed it up with a dominating performance against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday morning. The Wolverines came up just short in the title game that night, though, dropping a 3-1 decision to Northern Arizona.

Though this international exhibition has no bearing on UVU's official win-loss record, Nova KBM Branik remains one of the most formidable opponents on its schedule.

Based out of Maribor, Slovenia, KBM Branik retains a rich volleyball history that dates back to 1945, when Slovenia was still part of the New Yugoslavia. After winning the first ever Yugoslavian female championships in 1946, KBM Branik has maintained tenure as the most successful volleyball club in Slovenia and one of the more recognized clubs throughout Europe.

Since 1991, when Slovenia became an independent nation, Nova KBM Branik has won 10 Slovenian Championships and 13 Slovenian Cups, including a sweep of both titles last season. Also, in 2010, it won its first ever Middle European Zonal Association Zonal Championship, beating out top teams from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, and Croatia.

KBM Branik has also served as a welcome destination for many former American college players. Currently, Sarah Ammerman, once an outside hitter for Texas A&M, plays with the team.

The exhibition serves as a prelude to this weekend's La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational, where UVU will face 24th-ranked Michigan, Cal Poly, and Santa Clara.
