UVU's Clement Earns Great West Volleyball Player of the Week Honors Add Comment    Aug 31, 2011

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Utah Valley's Sarah Clement and Houston Baptist's Victoria Weatherly have been named Great West Conference Volleyball Players of the Week after outstanding performances last weekend. The inaugural volleyball awards of 2011 were announced Tuesday by the league office.

The defensive award went to Clement who had a big opening weekend for the Wolverines where she put up 18 blocks in three matches (1.50 block/set average). The senior middle blocker from Lindon, Utah, led UVU to a 2-1 record on the weekend with a 3-2 win over Illinois State and a 3-0 sweep of CSU Bakersfield before losing a 3-1 decision to Northern Illinois. Clement also recorded 25 kills for a 2.08 kills per set average to earn Wolverine Invitational All-Tournament Team honors.

Weatherly, a junior from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, received the offensive honor after she was named Most Valuable Player of the Lamar Tournament. The setter recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs vs. North Texas as the Huskies defeated the Mean Green 3-1. HBU also picked up 3-0 sweeps over Texas Southern and tournament host Lamar, giving the Huskies the 3-0 record on the week. For the tournament, Weatherly also registered 18 digs (1.80/set) and five blocks (0.50/set) to go along with her 98 total assists (9.80/set).

Others nominated for the offensive award were Rachel Levitt (Chicago State), Camilla Tinari (NJIT), Devin Trefz (North Dakota), Ijanae Holman (Texas-Pan American) and Chelsey Heaps (Utah Valley). Defensive nominees included Mysta Townsell (Chicago State), Courtney Whittleman (Houston Baptist), Renata Pandolfo (NJIT), Erica Turner (North Dakota) and Juri Franzen (Texas-Pan American).

Clement and the Wolverines will host Nova KBM Branik -- a Slovenian club volleyball team -- Wednesday at 7 p.m. for an exhibition match in the Activity Center.
