Southern Utah Softball Splits on Day Two in Boise

BOISE, Idaho - March 5 - Southern Utah University softball blew up for nine runs in the first inning against Seattle University on Saturday morning, posting a 12-10 victory, but was unable to find the same offensive output in the afternoon, falling to Boise State, 2-0.  The split leaves the T-Birds with an overall record of 4-12 on the year.

Southern Utah opened the home half of the first inning in game one with a lead-off walk by Jenavieve Purcell and four hits and one error later had a 9-0 advantage.  Aly Daniels caused the most damage in the frame with a three-run home run following a Seattle pitching change, punctuating the nine-run start.

The Redhawks countered with a pair of runs in the top of the second and third and tied the game at 9-9 with five runs in the top of the fourth.  However, a second three-run bomb by Southern Utah in the bottom of the fifth, this time off the bat of Darleen Fernandez, gave the Thunderbirds a 12-9 lead.  Seattle finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, but a ground ball to Fernandez at third turned the final out of the game and gave Southern Utah the 12-10 victory.

Southern Utah was threatening in the second game of the afternoon with Fernandez and Heather Richardson on second and third, respectively with two outs on the board in the top of the first.  However, the chance came to and end on an inning closing strikeout as the Thunderbirds left a total of six runners left on base during the contest.

Boise State recorded its runs on an RBI single in the bottom of the third and on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual 2-0 win.

Daniels had the hot bat for Southern Utah on the day as the senior hit .500 from the plate with a double, home run and three RBI as she racked up seven total bases and 1.167 slugging percentage.

The Thunderbirds will wrap up the tournament in Boise with a final game against the Seattle University Redhawks tomorrow morning.  The first pitch of the contest is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
