Jimmer Mania Add Comment    Feb 23, 2011

So I decided today to finally write about Jimmer.  I must first say that LDS folks are to only believe in one God, but I think that is officially out the window for most BYU fans.  This kid is lighting it up, hitting shots that are incredible and making others that guard him look almost high-school like.

That being said, the world seems to think that Jimmer is going to be the next great thing in the NBA.  There has even been talk of the Utah Jazz looking for a shooter like him.

So as a typical, everyday fan, one the roots for the Utah Utes (who need to fire their coach by the way), I believe that Jimmer is going to make it to the next level, the NBA.

But hear this, hear my thoughts on this.

He is 6' 2" tall.  He is a shooting guard. That in my book, seems very one dimensional.  One dimensional in that he is a shooter, and a scrappy layup monster.

So take it to the next level Jimmer.

He will be guarded by taller and very athletic guards.  The like of 6' 3" up to 6' 6".  A lot harder to shoot over.  He will be up against the best, the elite and it will take a lot to get around them.   He likes to shoot the ball, shoot first is what he is all about.  Assist he does, but not before he gets his look.  He will be playing with the best, the elite and he will not be the number one guy on the team.  So looking for himself first, is not an option with the likes of Kobe or others like that on the team.

Suggestions:

First, I would play like you will never play again.  Lead your team to the NCAA tournament and rock it.  Because if you are a first or even a second round bust, your stock will drop.  In fact, elite 8 or nothing is good enough.  Adjust to the future.  In the NCA tournament showcase coming up, show you are not one dimensional.  Show off making the rest of the team better around you.  Pass the ball once in a while before you look to shoot.  And add an additional move aside from a simple cross over to the "stuff".

We wish you the best of luck, in fact, we hope you rock, but man, you really need to check yourself before the NBA.

Jimmer doesn't have to worry about the height of guards in the NBA. He shoots 6 feet outside the NBA 3 point line and nails it. He's 44% from 3 point land and 87% overall. If you look at his last three years - he's only improved each year. If he continues to improve as the trend indicates - he could be a reckoning force even in the NBA.
