UVU: Women's Volleyball vs Michigan 2011 100.07 min. | 5.0 user rating Trailing 2-0, Utah Valley held a five-point advantage in the third set over No. 24 Michigan in Orem Friday evening. Despite taking the Maize and Blue all the way to game point, Michigan ultimately wrestled away the set, and the match, from UVU, 3-0 (17-25, 17-25, 25-27). "We lost tonight, but we fought hard. And I hope that we can learn from that and come back and play harder tomorrow," said head volleyball coach Sam Atoa. "These challenges help us get better and will help us be stronger. I expect that because of challenges like tonight we can find the confidence we need to compete. Our disappointment tonight comes more so from the things that we haven't executed that we know we can be better at." Ranked 24th in the AVCA Coaches Poll, Michigan (4-0) never trailed in either of the first two sets. Behind the strong play of Preseason All-Big 10 outside hitter Alex Hunt, the visiting Wolverines cruised to a 2-0 set lead. But in the third set, UVU (2-2) showed the kind of resiliency and fight that betrayed the story on the scoreboard. After the break, UVU raced out to a 9-6 lead to begin the third set. The stretch was highlighted by two kills and a service ace from Lindsay Barker. Following kills by Sarah Clement and Chelsey Heaps, and a service ace from Erica Nish, UVU built the lead to 13-8, forcing a timeout from the Michigan bench. But Michigan regrouped after the break, slowly whittling away at the deficit and eventually tying the score at 19. A kill from Jaicee Kuresa ... |

UVU: Women's Volleyball vs Syracuse 2011 128.75 min. | 5.0 user rating Lindsay Barker, Chelsey Heaps, and Sarah Clement each registered double digits in kills as Utah Valley stormed back from two sets down to steal a win against Big East foe Syracuse (20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-13). "It was a great win," said Wolverine head coach Sam Atoa. "We got off to a slow start for whatever reason, but it's not always how you start it's how you finish. We started serving the ball very well and that got us going." After Syracuse (5-2) jumped out a commanding 2-0 set lead, UVU (5-2) took over the match after a dominant third set. Behind three kills from Barker, a kill from Heaps and a block from Erica Nish, UVU raced out to an 11-3 lead, forcing a timeout from the Syracuse bench. The break didn't slow the UVU attack, though, as it ripped off seven of the next ten points to build the lead to 18-6. The Orange battled back to keep the score respectable, but the outcome was never in doubt as UVU took the third set 25-19. Despite falling behind 9-7 in the fourth set, UVU pieced together another extensive run. Powered by two kills from Barker, two more from Heaps, and two combined block assists from Jaicee Kuresa and Nish, the Wolverines raced out to an 18-11 advantage. UVU: Women's Volleyball vs Air Force 2010 156.38 min. | 4.0 user rating OREM, Utah - In a thrilling five-set match with the Air Force Academy in Orem on Friday, Utah Valley's women's volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to win its first match of the season 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 15-10). "Fortunately for us today was that it was the best out of five," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. We just couldn't seem to get anything going early on; we couldn't pass, we couldn't set and we couldn't get any momentum. Air Force played well and they really took us out of rhythm early on." "After the second set though, we turned into a completely different team and we played completely different in all areas of the game. The momentum that we gained at the beginning of the third set really seemed to help us. When you get on runs and build that momentum it really helps." UVU (1-4) senior Kayli Doxey and junior Chelsey Heaps both had double-doubles to help the Wolverines pickup their first victory of the season. Doxey finished with a match-high 21 kills and 11 digs, while Heaps added 12 kills and 17 digs. UVU: Women's Volleyball vs. Boise State 2011 121.93 min. | 5.0 user rating On a night that saw four different Wolverines reach double-digit kills, Utah Valley rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Boise State 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19) in a non-conference matchup Monday night in the Activity Center. Middle blockers Erica Nish and Sarah Clement came up big for UVU (14-6), delivering 13 and 11 kills respectively to go along with a combined 13 blocks. "We knew Boise State was a little inexperienced in the middle, and that happens to be where we have a good deal of experience," noted UVU head coach Sam Atoa. "We felt that if we could pass the ball well, we could take advantage of our strength in the middle. And defensively we had a good game, getting 14 blocks to their 11." Boise State (11-9), a member of the Mountain West Conference, looked strong after breaking a 7-7 tie with five consecutive points to take a 12-7 lead early in the match. UVU cut the deficit to three after a kill from Nish and a BSU error, but the Broncos would rally again, scoring five of the next six points to jump ahead 17-11. With the set almost slipping away, the Wolverines would mount a determined comeback effort ignited by a pair of kills from Jaicee Kuresa and a block from Clement that cut the deficit to 18-15. But three was the closest UVU would come, eventually dropping the first set 25-20. UVU claimed an early lead in the second set, stringing together a 6-1 run to grab an 8-5 lead after kills from Lindsay Barker, Kuresa, and a pair of blocks from Nish ... |

UVU: Women's Volleyball vs. Utah State 2011 102.82 min. | 0 user rating OREM, Utah -- Behind Jaicee Kuresa's match-high 13 kills and Chelsey Heaps' team-leading 10th double-double of the year, Utah Valley battled through 25 ties and 12 lead changes over the course of the match to notch a 3-0, straight set victory over in-state rival Utah State (25-20, 25-21, 25-20). With the win, the Wolverines have broken the 20-win barrier for the third straight year. "We went through some periods in the match where we went back and forth and traded errors [with Utah State], but I felt our girls controlled the match at the halfway point in each set," said UVU head volleyball coach Sam Atoa. "I'm very confident in the girls' abilities, and when they play like they can, we can be pretty good." With the match deadlocked at 8-8 in the early going, UVU (20-8, 8-1 GWC) pieced together a 5-2 run to create some separation after back-to-back kills from Kuresa and Erica Nish made the score 13-10. But USU (11-14, 6-5 WAC) responded with an identical run to take a 15-14 advantage. The Wolverines and Aggies seesawed point-for-point from there, until another of Kuresa's set-high four kills put UVU ahead 22-20. From there, kills from Brookelyn Campbell, Kalani Norris, and a big block assist from Nish and Norris propelled UVU to a 25-20 first set win. Despite the early setback, the Aggies looked determined at the start of the second frame, jumping out to a quick 7-3 lead. With momentum seemingly swinging toward the visitors, UVU clawed its way back to take a 15-14 lead ... |

UVU: KJZZ Features UVU's Women's Volleyball 25.37 min. | 5.0 user rating UVU's volleyball team left to New Zealand on May 3 and then traveled on to Samoa on May 11, where they then spent six days. While the first leg of the trip was focused mostly on volleyball, the team's stop in Samoa was more of a humanitarian visit. While in Samoa, the volleyball team was able to help give aid to those who were still feeling the effects from last fall's tsunami. The players helped distribute much needed supplies that they had collected prior to the trip to the people who had been hit the hardest by the disaster. Head Coach Sam Atoa, who was born in Samoa and lived there until he graduated from high school, had numerous connections to help make the trip possible. |
