After eliminating two of the top three seeds over the Great West Conference Tournament's first two days, the Utah Valley women's basketball team came from 18 points down to upset No. 1 seed and regular season champion North Dakota, 70-62, to become the conference's first-ever tournament champions. In a game that reflected the team's season, a slow offensive start found UVU (10-22) trailing early on before slowly chipping away and finishing strong to win the team's fifth straight game. Trailing by six late, Asumi Nakayama hit a free-throw line jumper and Jenna Johnson hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the second coming with 1:46 to go, to put the Wolverines up 59-57, their first lead of the game. UVU then hit 11-of-12 from the line over the final 1:23 to seal the win. Nakayama finished with 14 points, eight assists, five steals and five rebounds and was named the Tournament MVP after averaging 17.0 points, 7.7 assists, 5.0 rebounds and over three steals per game. Johnson, who scored 17 and was named to the All-Tournament team, helped limit GWC Player of the Year Kayla Bagaason of North Dakota (17-14) to eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. Kaycee Mansfield had her second double-double in two days, scoring 15 points and pulling down 12 rebounds and was also on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 10.0 points and 11.3 rebounds. "Honestly it feels very, very surreal right now. It has been a rocky, rocky road, and the thing that kept me hopeful all year long was that they would ...

Utah Valley got 22 points from Isiah Williams but Utah State pulled away in the second half to win 76-58 on Saturday in front of a NCAA Division I school-record 7124 fans in the UCCU Center. The previous attendance record was set last season when 6324 fans saw Utah Valley University induct Ronnie Price into its Hall of Fame. We played with tremendous emotion and were very excited about the great turnout. The crowd lifted us early but we couldn't ride that wave," said Coach Dick Hunsaker. "We were able to compete and battle but a couple of breakdowns at the end of the first half kind of set the tone for the second half." The first 20 minutes were neck-and-neck with seven ties, five lead changes and neither team leading by more than five. The Aggies (8-2) led 11-8 when Williams got hot, scoring the next 12 points during a 11-4 spurt to put the Wolverines (4-6) up 19-15. The scored was tied at 25 with 3:39 left until the break before USU went into the half with a three-point edge, 33-30. In the second half, Utah State quickly pushed the lead to seven before Holton Hunsaker hit a three to get the Wolverines within four, 43-39, with 14:48 remaining. USU scored the next five to take a nine-point lead before Williams hit consecutive buckets to make it 48-43. From there the Aggies went on an 11-1 run to take a 59-44 lead. USU shot 53.8 percent in the decisive second half and 47.1 percent for the game. Utah Valley finished with 36.4 percent shooting. Besides Williams' 22, Hunsaker ...

Utah Valley beat Texas-Pan American 81-65 in the quarterfinals Wednesday to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive season. "We ran up against a Chicago State team which was a difficult match up for us and they're a pretty good team. They rolled through everybody." Chicago State's Tressa Beckel scored the first six points of the game, and the Cougars never looked back. The Wolverines shot a respectable 39 percent from the field, but couldn't overcome 25 turnovers, which led to 35 Chicago State points. The Cougars ended up shooting 44.6 percent from the field. "I feel very fortunate that we were able to compete and fight and pull out a hard-fought win." Utah Valley started 8-of-9 from the field and led 21-6 when Justin Baker nailed a three at the 12:35 mark of the half. Despite 16 points and 17 rebounds from Geddes Robinson, Utah Valley came up short against a streaking Georgia State team, 71-68, on Saturday night in the UCCU Center. Robinson matched a career high with 17 rebounds - eight on the offensive glass - but the Panthers (8-3) held off the Wolverines (6-6) in the final seconds to win their eighth straight game. "I just didn't think we played well enough," said UVU coach Dick Hunsaker. "Georgia State had a lot to do with that but we simply didn't play well enough to win the game." UVU (6-6) trailed by nine at the three-minute mark and nearly pulled off a last-gasp comeback. Holton Hunsaker made three free throws with 33 seconds left to get the Wolverines within five and later drilled a deep trey to make it 70-68 with 12 seconds remaining. Jihad Ali hit 1-of-2 from the line to push the lead to three and then came up with a big steal in the final seconds to help the Panthers (8-3) seal the win. South Dakota was the only team to beat Utah Valley during the Great West Conference regular season, and Friday night in the men's semifinals of the conference tournament, the Coyotes struck again, taking down the No. 1-seed Wolverines, 72-70, but it came with a little controversy. With 4.6 seconds left, USD's Jake Thomas hit the second of two foul shots to give the Coyotes the two-point advantage. UVU's Isiah Williams, who led the Wolverines with a 21 points, took the inbounds pass and drove down the right side. Just past half court, in an attempt to dribble around a defender, he was called for stepping out of bounds, but video replay seemed to show otherwise. Ironically, Williams hit a 30-foot 3-pointer immediately following the whistle that would have given the Wolverines a one-point lead with just over two seconds remaining. With 2.1 seconds left, UVU fouled and USD missed both shots, and Jordan Swarbrick's shot from three-quarter court rimmed off as time expired. "Give South Dakota all the credit in the world, but we didn't not play our best game," UVU coach Dick Hunsaker said. "They got their shooters on track early. It was a tough game. Congratulations to South Dakota. They're the defending tournament champions and they played like it." In the second half alone, the game was tied or the lead changed hands 10 times. With 10:36 left in the game, the Wolverines (19-11) trailed by seven points, but they slowly whittled away at the lead. Geddes Robinson hit a pair of ...

Jordan Swarbrick hit a pair of free throws with just over eight seconds to go in regulation before the game-tying shot. Singleton then scored the six of the first eight points in overtime as the Black Bears (1-0) began OT on a 10-0 run. "I really thought we ran out of steam, to be honest We just weren't able to answer that bell in OT," said UVU coach Dick Hunsaker. "I thought we played our hearts out. I knew how tough Maine was by leading their league in defense. I was pleased how we fought and competed and stood up the physical test that they presented." Utah Valley got two big 3-pointers from Holton Hunsaker and clutch free throws from Isiah Williams and Alfonzo Hubbard down the stretch as it held off a surging Seattle squad, 77-72, Saturday night in the UCCU Center. The game was the first of back-to-back meetings for the Wolverines with the Redhawks. Ben Aird pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with eight points, and Hubbard added nine points off the bench. "I thought we continued to compete and play through tough stretches," said Wolverine coach Dick Hunsaker. "At times we made it harder on ourselves than we should have. I was just real pleased and proud of the way our kids responded. That was a physical, talented team that we played." Coming out of halftime with a 40-28 lead, UVU (8-10) saw Seattle (3-10) reel off a quick 12-4 run to cut the lead to 44-40 with just over 16 minutes to play. It seemed the Wolverines had weathered the storm when they responded with a 10-2 run of their own, highlighted by consecutive treys from Williams, to jump ahead 54-42 with 12:37 remaining. But the Redhawks would storm back, putting together a 17-4 run to take their first lead since 18:28 in the first half at 59-58. The hot shooting of Jarell Flora propelled the run for Seattle as the freshman connected on three treys in the rally. Seattle maintained a 68-67 lead with 3:40 left when Hunsaker caught fire ...
